Doha, qatar (September 19, 2026): Nissan has officially detailed the visual language behind its performance braking systems, shedding light on how distinct caliper finishes signal vehicle capability, engineering intent and heritage across its sports car and NISMO line-ups. Designed to offer immediate visual context for enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike, Nissan’s custom caliper palette ranges from functional silver to performance-focused red, gold and yellow.
This visual language traces back to Nissan’s performance flagship, the GT-R, where brake hardware and color became a defining part of how capability was communicated. Today, these finishes can be found across current and historic Nissan performance vehicles globally, with regional examples including the Nissan Z line-up and Patrol NISMO.

What do silver calipers mean on a Nissan vehicle?
Silver calipers are standard across most of the Nissan line-up, with the majority of vehicles featuring this color.
While all Nissan braking systems are designed to provide confident, smooth stopping power across a variety of conditions, those with silver calipers are generally optimized for everyday driving rather than the high-performance applications outlined below.
Red calipers: A clear performance cue
Red brake calipers are a bold indication that a vehicle has been engineered for high performance.
On the 2027 Nissan Z Performance in the US, Akebono four-piston front and two-piston rear aluminum calipers replace the two-piston front and one-piston rear cast-iron setup offered on the Z Sport. The 2010 Nissan 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition previously featured red Akebono calipers.
In the Middle East, red-painted calipers feature across the Nissan Z line-up. The 2026 Nissan Z Heritage Edition pairs them with a distinctive Midnight Purple exterior and bronze RAYS forged-alloy wheels inspired by Nissan’s GT-R heritage.
The 2026 Nissan Z NISMO features a track-enhanced braking system with massive 15.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors paired with high-friction performance pads. Powered by a 420-hp twin-turbo V6, the sports car utilizes stiffened engine mounts which, alongside the upgraded Akebono brakes, ensure razor-sharp responsiveness and track reliability.
Patrol NISMO also features red brake calipers as part of its performance-focused design. Its front bumper directs cooling air towards the brakes, helping reduce brake disc temperatures by 6%, while its lightweight 22-inch forged-aluminum RAYS wheels further support brake cooling and responsiveness.
Gold calipers indicate Brembo braking systems
Gold calipers are applied to Nissan vehicles equipped with Brembo braking systems.
The iconic R34 GT-R, sold in Japan, was the first Nissan to feature gold calipers, beginning in 1999. Although the GT-R was available with Brembo brakes before then, its calipers were finished in black.
Gold calipers quickly became synonymous with Nissan performance through the R34. In the US, the Nissan 350Z Track Edition subsequently introduced gold Brembo calipers in 2003.
The R35-generation GT-R continued the tradition with gold six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, further strengthening the association between the finish and Nissan’s highest levels of braking performance.
Yellow calipers: The rarest, most track-capable setup
Yellow calipers are especially rare on Nissan vehicles
On selected GT-R models, yellow calipers indicate the use of ultra-high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes. Designed to provide exceptional resistance to brake fade over repeated high-intensity track laps, the system was offered on vehicles including the 2020 GT-R NISMO and GT-R Track Edition in selected markets.
Special editions and exceptions
At times, concept vehicles and special editions used caliper colors that depart from Nissan’s traditional conventions.
The 2020 GT-R50 by Italdesign featured red Brembo calipers, despite gold traditionally being associated with Nissan models equipped with Brembo braking systems.
The Nissan Z Proto introduced in the Middle East also featured yellow calipers, although it wasn’t equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes. Instead, the color formed part of the models’ distinctive visual identity.
